A creative, interactive approach to teaching Scripture through storytelling and henna art.
What if participants could tell a story from Scripture just by looking at their hand? That’s exactly what henna Bible storytelling makes possible — and it’s a memorable way to help people engage with God’s Word and share it with others.
I’ve used this activity with teens, college students, and adult women, and every time people connect deeply with the Scriptures. Something about the combination of art, story, and Scripture together makes the material stick in a way that a typical lesson doesn’t.

Several years ago, a friend of mine — a missionary serving overseas — introduced me to Bible storytelling through henna designs. In the culture she served, women regularly adorned their skin with henna for celebrations, festivals, and everyday beauty. She learned to create designs that symbolically represented Bible stories, and those designs became a natural, non-threatening way to open conversations about Scripture with the women around her.
I loved the idea immediately and realized it could work just about anywhere. Henna is beautiful and noticeable — people ask about it. And when a design tells a story from Scripture, that question becomes an opportunity to share your faith. You can explore the henna designs and the Bible stories that go with them at HennaStories.org.
1. Plan for Enough Time
This isn’t a quick activity. Participants will be reading passages, learning to retell stories, and applying henna — all of which takes time to do well. Plan for 2–4 hours depending on your group size. When I hosted 15 students and adults, it took about three hours from start to finish.
2. Choose Your Stories and Designs
Visit HennaStories.org to select designs that correspond to the Bible stories you want participants to memorize. I used Pray for Perseverance and Pray for Mercy. Print the designs alongside the corresponding Scriptures so everyone has a reference to work from during the activity.
3. Introduce the Activity
Before participants begin, take a few minutes to explain what henna is and how it can be used as a storytelling tool. Then:
This gives participants a model to follow before they practice on their own.
4. Practice Retelling
Pair participants and have them take turns retelling the story using the design as a guide. After the practice time, lead a brief discussion to help the passage land with meaning:
Note: This isn’t a deep Bible study — the goal is for participants to understand why the passage matters and be able to share that understanding with someone else.
5. Apply the Henna
Once participants are comfortable with the story, they can apply henna to themselves or with help from someone experienced. Find printable designs at HennaStories.org. Encourage everyone to choose the story and design they felt most connected to.
This activity is more than just art. Each design becomes a conversation starter, a personal reminder of God’s Word, and a creative tool for sharing faith with others. When participants walk away with henna on their hands and a story in their hearts, they’re equipped to share it — naturally, personally, and memorably.
Whether you’re doing this with teens, college students, or adult women, henna Bible storytelling is a joyful, hands-on way to know God and make Him known.
